Why Don't I Go First?
Hey guys!
Nick here. And I’ve realized that I’ve been asking a lot of people to show off their work while keeping my own cards close to chest. I can’t speak for everyone in the community, but I get very nervous when I think about showing anyone my work, especially written work. My most comfortable medium of expression is theatre acting, but for this, I really wanted to go outside my comfort zone and show you guys some pieces I’ve recently done and others that are a bit older. Let’s start with some video editing which I tend to feel fine with.
Lighting Design Project
This was a really really fun project to make with the rest of my lighting design class. We alternated who directed, acted and designed light scene by scene so you’re seeing a lot of roles being rotated. We didn’t really have a precise plot, but we agreed that there were gangsters and a couple thieves and some chases. After we filmed all the scenes, I went ahead and assembled it all together. I’ll refrain from pointing out all the things I wish I could have changed, with the exception of pointing out that sometimes my suspenders are in the shots and sometimes they are simply not.
Asian American Cultures Festival Trailer
This was an absolutely pleasure to work on simply because I got to work with this performance footage for a while. Almost all of the interest in this video is generated by the performance of the dancers and musicians, however I love editing to music because pacing because much more intuitive.
Ayola: A Constructed Language Project
Oh man, I completely forgot about this project. Wow, yeah, so this is from when I used to work for Professor Stimets working on his constructed language project. An absolutely amazing and intelligent guy. Could hold a conversation on nearly any topic.
If you can’t tell, I’m also trying to stall before presenting any written work.
Cambodian Culture Final
This was my final essay for Intro to Cambodian Culture, a really great cultural dive into the history of the Khmer people. I found it particularly meaningful to me in understanding the cultural history of a third of Lowell’s citizenry. If this piece interests you, email me because I have a ton of research sources. Special thanks to Professor Todd Tietchen for teaching such a comprehensive class. Click on the image to read the article.
Scriptwork
While I was Membership Coordinator for the Off-Broadway Players I wrote some scripts in hopes of collaborating with WUML so we could air original works on the air. While we got to the recording booth, we never got to airing any of the promos or prospective plays.
A silly anxiety fueled play written toward the end of my screenwriting class. I actually tend to like this one down the line. Sort of dumb but in a “I’m dumb” sort of way.
Photography

Yeah, these are a few photographs I’ve taken.
First one is the only picture I’ve ever submitted for publication for the UMass Lowell literary magazine The Offering.
Taken on my trip to New York. I was shadowing my dad make a bunch of project proposals to angel investors. When we visited this city it was trash day. The sidewalks were stacked with trash.
Picture of the moon taking with a low shutter speed. These pictures were a ton of fun to make because unlike the typical case, I had to intentionally move the camera to create the desired effect.
My old house before me, my mom and my brother got evicted. Used this to make promotional materials for a month long yard sale, which ended with an epic basement show.
The view outside my bedroom window on a particularly frosty winter day.
I took a picture of my shadow in a river. Everything besides the shadows in the water were overexposed and appear like an edited silhouette.
The shattered head of an old Greek in the MET. Half the man he used to be indeed.
Okay!
That wasn’t so bad. These are a lot of my better works throughout the years and as you can tell they’re amateurish and sometimes crude. Combing through a lot of my old works was at times pretty cringey and other times nostalgic as fuh. I really recommend trying it out and dusting off the old projects. As for me, I’ve shown pretty much half of the works I’m fairly proud of from college. After I show the second half, I’ll have to rely on generating new works. Out of the frying pan!
You should try it. Come on in, the water’s cold. I know the flyer says deadline is the fifteenth, but that’s just to give this project structure. Submit your stuff whenever you like. I bet it’s better than you think.
